Managing Life Transitions AKA Career Pivot

Managing Life Transitions AKA Career Pivot

My daughter recently changed her college major; it wasn't an easy decision. She was unhappy for many months, which took a toll on her. She was concerned about her future and making the right decision; after all, she had already invested two years in a specialized field. Sound somewhat familiar?

Seeking guidance, she consulted her advisor and engaged with professors across various areas of interest. She researched companies and job market predictions. She evaluated her options and gradually began to shape a well-thought-out plan.

A passionate writer since childhood, coupled with an impressive appreciation for science, she found a unique intersection. The result? A Major in English with double minors in Biology and Science Writing. Her forward-thinking approach aligns with the evolving landscape of patient-centric healthcare, as she aspires to translate complex scientific research into digestible content for all.

Her journey taught me valuable lessons. It underscored the importance of prioritizing health and happiness over sticking to a path that takes a toll. However, it also emphasized the necessity of thorough planning and research when making significant pivots; otherwise, you can end up back where you started.

Questions to ask yourself as you embark on a life transition.

What skills do I possess that are transferable?
Which skills do I genuinely enjoy and want to refine?
What factors are crucial to me—salary, work-life balance, company mission?

I am excited to see her next chapter.
